#BreakTheBoxes

Azmera wrote, produced, and performed her ‘Break The Boxes’ visual poetry series in 2015 at the University of Southern California (USC). This series responds to issues of police brutality, racial discrimination, domestic violence and mental health to imagine alternative possibilities to justice and peace building. As an independent production the series received the Maya Angelou Artistry Award by the Alpha Phi Alpha chapter at USC and the Most Innovative Trojan Award by the Center for Black Culture and Student Affairs (CBCSA). The project went on to win a U.S. Fulbright Creative and Performing Arts Award to study Capoeira in its birthplace, Salvador Bahia, Brazil in 2017-2018.
